Dr. Pernicano attended Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania for his B.A in Psychology and then attended the University of Notre Dame for his M.A. and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. Dr. Pernicano’s career has included federal service throughout many parts of the United States with the Veterans Administration and Department of Defense, mixed with many years of private practice and academic teaching. Dr. Pernicano recently retired as the Chief of Mental Health at the VA Hospital in Lexington, KY. He and his wife decided to return to San Antonio because they fell in love with the Hill Country when, some years ago, they lived and worked in Kerrville.
Dr. Pernicano and his wife have 2 adult children. His daughter is a classically trained concert violinist performing in Pittsburgh, PA and his artistic son lives in Louisville, KY. Dr. Pernicano and his wife share many interests in family life, classical and choral musical performance and appreciation, love of the outdoors, traveling around the country in a recreational vehicle, and photography.
Dr. Pernicano’s approach to counseling is like his lifestyle in general. He believes that forming close and transparent working relationships and focusing on human behavior across a diverse spectrum yields positive results both in life and in therapy. He has experience with a broad population from late adolescents through senior adults and has worked in residential, outpatient and inpatient treatment settings. He is a generalist in practice and works with individuals, groups and couples having substance use disorders and dual diagnoses, life adjustment issues, mood disorders, PTSD and psychoses.
Dr. Pernicano is truly grateful for an opportunity to return to the beautiful city of San Antonio with sincere and friendly residents and wonderful culture.
